Selections from Die Plage

Gaber’s complete body of work comprises over 4,200 canvases. Over the nine years he dedicated to Die Plage, he curated four exhibitions, each showcasing a selection of the completed work. We have taken a similarly selective approach, presenting works that span a diverse range of themes, compositional styles, and periods of German history between 1918 and 1945. Our goal is to highlight the breadth and scope of Gaber’s imagination and artistic vision.

The work is divided into thematic categories including faces, the German military, Weimar culture, the 1936 Olympics, youth, the Bauhaus movement, and the Holocaust. Stylistically, they include examples of Dada-era photomontage and constructivist works. Many other subjects explored in the photomontages of Die Plage are absent here, including religion, Renaissance paintings, landscapes, erotica, the autobahn, and both classical and German vernacular architecture. The selections presented here represent only a fraction of Gaber’s larger opus.
