About us
Dan J. Epstein Family Foundation
Founded in 2010 by Dan J. Epstein, the Dan J. Epstein Family Foundation is based in Chicago and is dedicated to providing financial support to under-resourced youth in the fine arts. Through innovative scholarship and education programs in collaboration with leading arts institutions, the Foundation fosters artistic talent and creative exploration. Additionally, it champions unique, transformational projects such as the Die Plage project and underwrites commissions of new artworks and special projects in both the arts and breast cancer focused initiatives.
The Team
The Dan J. Epstein Family Foundation’s team for Die Plage includes Christina Ankofska (photographer and partner of the artist), Dan Epstein (president of the Foundation and sponsor of the Die Plage project), Judy Margles (director emerita, Oregon Jewish Museum and Center for Holocaust Education), Steve Rees (archivist and website team lead), Jock Reynolds (director emeritus, Yale University Art Gallery) and Melissa Yaverbaum (exhibition curator).
Molly Beckhardt provided research and writing. Layla Beckhardt contributed copyediting and translation services. Chris Gaber and Greg Smith provided technical consulting.
Special thanks to Steve Gaber, Harley Gaber’s older brother and executor of his estate, for donating Die Plage to the Dan J. Epstein Family Foundation, ensuring its preservation, study, and exhibition.
This website was developed and designed through a collaboration between Fabrique and Q42, with the Fabrique team including Amanda Boomstra (project leader), June Park (designer), and Sytze van der Wolk (designer), while development was handled by Layla Hoogeveen (Q42).
Bryan Potter Design built and designed the exhibitions in Portland (2022-23) and Los Angeles (2025), and their creative contributions have influenced our approach to this website.
The Art Authority scanning team in Ashland, Oregon, created the digital archive and cataloged the canvases.
